Getting to Zandvoort

If your arrival airport is Schiphol, then you have to take a train to Amsterdam Central. From there, take another train to Zandvoort. In around 30 minutes, you will arrive at Zandvoort station. (Yes, it’s that close!) It’s only a 200-meter walk from the station to the beach. If you’re planning your trip, we highly recommend booking your train ticket in advance, especially in summer, when the beach crowd rolls in like the tide.

First Impressions of Zandvoort

Zandvoort is the kind of town that feels like it’s perpetually on holiday. Brightly painted beach houses on the coastline, families ride bikes along the promenade, and seagulls fly around. The smell of kibbeling (fried fish bites—try them!) mixes with salty sea air, and instantly, you’re in vacation mode.

There are many more snacks that you can try. Perhaps, you would want to try Dutch herring, or “Hollandse Nieuwe.” It is a traditional meal made of raw, mildly salted herring that is frequently served with chopped onions and pickles. It’s a classic Dutch snack, and the most traditional way to eat it is to hold it by the tail, tilt your head back, and bite. This way of eating is called “haringhappen.”

Beach Day Essentials: What to pack

Lunch by the Waves

When it’s lunchtime, there are many restaurants in the city and also on the beachside that you can choose from. There is no need to book in advance, as you can simply walk in and enjoy your choice of meals.

If you’re more of a DIY, worry not. Stop by the grocery stores such as Albert Heijn, Dirk and DekaMarkt on your way from the station and grab cheese, crackers, snacks, and juice boxes for a budget-friendly beach feast.

Tips for Visiting Zandvoort

1. Go Early for a Good Spot

Zandvoort Beach can get crowded, especially in summer or during events at the nearby Circuit Zandvoort. Arrive early to secure a good spot on the sand or at a beach club.

2. Use Public Transport

Parking could be expensive when you stay the whole day or longer. The train from Amsterdam to Zandvoort aan Zee takes about 30 minutes and drops you within walking distance of the beach.

3. Try a Beach Club

Zandvoort is known for its trendy beach clubs like Tijn Akersloot or Ubuntu Beach. You can rent sunbeds, enjoy food and drinks, and relax in style.

4. Watch for Windy Weather

The Dutch coast can be breezy. Bring a windbreaker or hoodie, even in summer, and check the weather forecast before heading out.

5. Explore Beyond the Sand

Zandvoort borders Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland, which is perfect for cycling or walking through dunes and spotting wildlife like deer.

Zandvoort turned out to be more than just a beach. The city itself offers a relaxing vibe where you can stroll the boulevard either to eat out, search for souvenirs or simply hang out with family and friends.
