When I created “Soul Shadow,” I wanted to explore the quiet and often hidden layers of our inner world. Sometimes, we don’t even realise that the parts of ourselves exist just beyond the light, in that space where memory, longing, and self-reflection mix with each other.
The deep purples create a rich, meditative atmosphere, a space that feels both mysterious and secretive. While the layered, sweeping brushstrokes bring that depth to life, echoing the restless texture of our thoughts and memories, as unknown to our minds. Against this softness, sharp blue lines cut through like sudden flashes of clarity, guiding the eye with precision and contrast, while the scattered red splatters across the surface as raw bursts of passion and vulnerability. Together, these colours and gestures create a dialogue between certainty and serenity.
My creative process for this piece began with sitting in silence, and allowing my brush to respond to feelings that came out along the process. I layered paint slowly, adding depth until the canvas itself began to feel like it was breathing.
When viewers engage with “Soul Shadow,” I want them to feel both the serenity and the tension within themselves. It is to recognise that shadow isn’t something to fear but something to embrace. Our shadows are where our most authentic selves often dwell, waiting to be acknowledged. I hope this piece serves as a mirror for others, encouraging them to look inward and find beauty even in the parts of themselves they may try to hide. It’s an invitation to honour complexity, to accept the coexistence of darkness and light within the soul.
